In this episode, we are going to talk about the one thing that is stopping you from booking clients.
There’s really two stages to starting your business. The first stage is getting everything set up. Which is choosing your business name, grabbing your URL, setting up your website, choosing your branding, all that stuff.
And then there’s the second stage of actually launching and announcing to the world that you’re open and starting to enroll clients. And a lot of people will just stay stuck in the first one. They will spend so much time on this first stage that they don’t ever get to stage two and actually start booking clients.
Let’s say you have been preparing for this marathon race, working so hard. You’ve been training for months. You put in all that work behind the scenes. The day shows up for the race, you get there and you’re like, “you know what? I don’t know if I can actually do this. I don’t know if I can finish this. I don’t know if I’m as good as all these other people that are here”.
So you just go home. Instead of just showing up and figuring out if you can do it, you took yourself out of the race and you’re looking at yourself as a failure. You didn’t get to finish the race, but you never even gave yourself a chance to begin with.
Same thing with your business. So many people stay stuck in this first stage. They look at their business as a failure because now they’ve been in this stage for like weeks or months and they haven’t booked any clients and they feel like they failed. They feel like, you know what I’ve been putting in all this work and I haven’t booked any clients. But it’s because they took themselves out of the race and didn’t even give themselves a chance. They didn’t show up.
If you’ve been stuck in this stage of all the behind the scenes tasks, getting everything set up and you haven’t really launched your services. You haven’t really marketed them and haven’t been consistent with your marketing so you can start booking clients.
If this sounds really familiar to you and you’re nodding your head, then we’re going to talk about how to make sure you get to stage two and start booking clients so that your business can be profitable now.
I was actually stuck in stage one for a while. I didn’t make a single dollar in my business for months. I worked on my website like 25 times. I branded and rebranded and rebranded. I tweaked my packages, added more services, changed the prices. I just kept going back and focusing on all of this stuff because I was scared. I was scared to put myself out there and actually book a client. Because then it becomes real.
If you get out there and book a client, now someone just paid you for a service and that brings up a lot of fear and self-doubt, and that’s why we actually start self sabotaging and stay stuck in this first stage because we’re nervous of what’s going to happen if we put ourselves out there.
What’s the worst that can really happen. No one hires you? That’s not going to happen. People book clients all the time who aren’t even good at what they do. And you are really good at what you do. You’re listening to this podcast because you care about creating a good business and booking clients. So you will book clients. It’s just a matter of getting over that self doubt and waiting for everything to be perfect behind the scenes and just booking clients.
Because the only thing stopping you really from booking clients is showing up and talking about your services and showing up on Instagram every day and promoting your services. That’s the only thing that’s stopping you.
All you need to do is when you sit down to work every day, don’t do behind the scenes stuff. You’ve done enough behind the scenes tasks. You’ve got everything good to go. Honestly, as long as you have an inquiry form set up where people can fill out a form if they’re interested in hiring you, then you can get started. You can start sending everyone to that form so you can start booking discovery calls and start enrolling clients.
Remember, stuff behind the scenes doesn’t have to be super perfect. Your website and branding and all of that is going to change as your business grows. The business you’re setting up right now is probably gonna look completely different in like a year, two years, five years. So you don’t have to have it all figured out. It’s not all set in stone.
You just have to start booking clients because that’s how you become a business. Otherwise you’re just stuck in this expensive hobby where you’re spending all this money to create this business and you’re not getting any money coming in. So all you have to do is market your services and.
Some of the behind the scenes have to get done, of course. But if you are just staying behind the scenes of your business, then no one’s going to know you exist. Right now no one really knows you exist. Your ideal clients are out there. They’re struggling, they’re struggling with their design or their copywriting or their workload and they’re looking to hire someone like you. And they can’t find you, if you aren’t showing up, if you’re just hiding behind your laptop.
You have to get out there and start talking to them every single day, which again is another really uncomfortable thing. If sales and marketing aren’t your thing that’s going to feel uncomfortable to get out there. But that is what you need to do to book clients.
Show up every day, talk about what you do, who you do it for and how they can hire you. That’s it. Bare minimum, you need an inquiry form to put in your Instagram bio or whatever social media platform you’re using. Other than that, all the other stuff isn’t important. Those are not money making tasks.
You have to focus on your money making tasks, which is your marketing. So make that plan, write it down so that you sit down at your laptop and you say, okay, this is what I’m focusing on. I’m going to hop on Instagram. I’m going to schedule out next week’s Instagram posts. I’m going to write out some Instagram story outlines of how I’m going to market my services. Keep that list right there, your money making marketing activities, so that when you sit down, you know exactly what to focus on. And on that money making list is never going to be update branding or change my packages again, or tweak my service is page copy.
None of those tasks are ever going to make it on your money making list. Write down what tasks are going to make you money and just stick to that. You’ve spent enough time in this startup stage and you’re ready to launch and start booking those clients.
