What if I told you there was a type of marketing that gets ideal clients and customers to your website, gives your website SEO a major boost, and will keep generating traffic to your website for months and years after you publish it?
Well there is, and it’s blogging!
I’ve noticed in the last few years people have put more focus onto creating Instagram content and podcasts and have totally forgotten about blogging. Blogging is an incredible way to drive organic (free) traffic to your website and attract new leads. If you’ve been thinking about adding blogging to your marketing strategy this year, here are some big benefits of blogging.
4 big benefits of blogging for your business:
1. Blog Posts Boost the Search Engine Optimization of your Website
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the quality and quantity of traffic to your website. With a blog, search engines have a lot of content to pull from that they can use to push in front of their users. Without one, search engines only have your home page and services page to pull from, which makes it a lot harder to rank in Google.
Think about it: if you’re a graphic designer for online business owners, there are a lot of other people who offer the same service to the same niche. So if someone Googles “graphic designer for online business owner” there will be a ton of results that show up. But if your ideal client goes to Google and types in “how to design a gift box for a business mastermind” and you just published a blog post recapping a recent mastermind gift box you designed for a client, you have a better chance at ranking on Google.
The key to get your blog posts to rank in search engines is to research what your ideal clients and customers are asking so you can tailor your content around their questions. When your blog posts topic are strategically written for your ideal clients and customers, search engines will send quality traffic to your website, for free.
2. Blog Posts have a long shelf life
Blog posts can (+ will) generate traffic to your website for as long as the content is relevant. Unlike social media, where your posts are just put in front of your audience for a couple hours or days, blog posts consistently drive traffic to your website. Whether it be search engines or Pinterest, if people keep clicking on your blog post link and continue to search for that blog post topic, your post will keep showing up. Search engines and Pinterest don’t focus on the newest content, they focus on the most relevant content.
When planning out your blog posts, be sure to stay away from fads that won’t be relevant long and focus on content that will still be relevant months, or years from now.
3. Blog Posts Drive Free Traffic to Your Website
Paid ads on Instagram and Facebook have become popular because those platforms lean towards promoting paid content. But search engines and Pinterest will send traffic to your blog for free. Yes, you can use paid ads on those platforms, but you don’t need to to get high quality traffic!
Plus, when people are actively searching for something, they’ll go to a Google or Pinterest, not social media. With social media websites you really can’t search and find the answer you’re looking for in the same efficient way.
4. Blog Content Positions You as an Expert
Blogging can quickly position you as an expert on a specific topic. When a potential client or customer visits your website, they can see from your blog posts that you’re an expert on your product topic. When your blog posts are valuable, it also builds trust with your audience. When they learn something or able to get something valuable out of your blog content, for free, they’ll be more likely to purchase your paid product because you’ve started build trust with them already.
Now that you know the benefits of blogging, here are 3 ways you can optimize your blog posts for SEO.
3 Ways to Optimize Your Blog Posts for SEO
Test your blog post title in CoSchedule
CoSchedule is a free tool I use to make sure my blog post titles have a better chance at ranking on search engines. You type in your blog post title and it will rank it on a scale of 0-100, 100 being extremely likely it will rank on search engines. It will also tell you what improvements you can make to boost your score to increase your searchability.
When I first entered the title for this post, I got a score of 64. That’s not a terrible score but I wanted it to be higher so I reworked it a bit, resubmitted it and got an 87, which I was happy with! I find it really helpful to come up with blog post titles that will attract my ideal customers.
Add tags to your blog posts
You can add tags to your WordPress blog posts on the right hand side of your blog post. Type in tags that people may search in Google that relate to your blog post. For example, for this blog post, my tags are “optimize blog post for seo” and “benefits of blogging”. Keep these short and specific. You wouldn’t want to add a tag for something general like “blogging” because that would bring up a lot of general posts in search engines.
Add alt text to images in your blog post
Whenever you add images in your blog post, like your featured image, be sure to fill in the alt text. This is helpful for image searches in search engines. If someone searches Google and then clicks the images tab, Google crawls websites for the alt text of images that relate to their search. Be specific and make sure your image alt text relate to your blog post topic to drive quality traffic.
Now it’s time to start brainstorming some blog posts so you can utilize blogging in your marketing strategy!
